Within the Miahuatlán region of southern Oaxaca sits the small community of San Luis Amatlán, where the Gutierrez family have been making mezcal for generations.
We have been visiting and working with the family since 2017 and started to gain an appreciation of some of the issues effecting production in the region.
The increase in demand of the special agave varieties found here has recently seen locals selling to buyers from other states, leaving Amatlán with an upcoming Tobalá shortage.
We work with the family to support their agave nursery. But these plants take many years to mature and in the meantime it’s all the more reason to savour this outstanding batch from 2018.

House Tasting Notes:
A wonderfully herbaceous Tobalá (A. Potatorum), proofed to the traditional strength of the region by this master mezcalero. The style of production and terroir of this community is typified by a clean crisp and saline minerality. Here those elements are perfectly balanced with a richness and depth that lets you know why Tobalá is known at the ‘king of agaves’.
