Oaxaca’s southern Ejutla district is known for its bold culture – its cuisine, its traditional dance, and its agave spirits. It's not uncommon to find very high proof distillations here.

We're pleased to announce this bottling as the very first of our new 'Puntas Collection' range.

Cultivated Tobaziche

Freshly roasted

Luis & Sergio unloading Tobaziche

Here in San Agustín Amatengo, Luis and his family employ a ‘refrescadera’ distillation technique that allows for a 2-in-1 distillation with a single pass of the alembic still.

Find more information on this technique and other batches from the palenque in the Oaxaca Central Valley section of our mezcal map.

Installing the refrescadera

Cultivated maguey Tobaziche (A. Karwinski) was harvested in March 2024, roasted for 3 days, crushed with a tahona so large it takes two bulls to pull, fermented with well water, and distilled in the quintessential 2-in-1 style.

Distilling

This high proof, puntas, cut of the distillation is most often reserved for family and friends.

Just 30 litres produced. It's one for the very top shelf collection.

Gracias Luis

House Tasting Notes:

Nose: A rich clove heavy spiciness on first nose, with a feeling it’s going to open to give a lot more with aeration. Very sweet, with bags of roasted agave.

Palate: There’s a distinct tingle to the mouth feel with this level of alcohol – small sips needed here. It’s dusty, with a wonderful continuation of that cooked agave sweetness.

Finish: It just seems to keep getting sweeter, with almost like a molasses or a high proof rum feeling into the back end.

With time in the glass: It evaporates.
